London strike dates: When train, Tube and junior doctors’ strikes are planned in July 2023

Major strike action is continuing this month, with doctors and rail workers walking out, along with London Underground staff

Major strike action is continuing this month, with doctors and rail workers walking out.

In London, this will be compounded by a Tube strike, that was announced by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) last week.

Here’s a full list of strikes that will affect the capital in July, broken down by industry.

When are the Tube strikes?

London Underground workers represented by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) will strike on the following dates:

  • Sunday 23 July
  • Tuesday 25 July
  • Wednesday 26 July
  • Thursday 27 July
  • Friday 28 July

The union said that it would be a rolling series of strikes, with different grades and sections of the Tube taking action on different days.

Tube drivers represented by Aslef will also take industrial action on Wednesday 26 July and Friday 28 July over possible changes to their pensions and working conditions.

The strikes will overlap with two days of the RMT action and are likely to shut down the entire London Underground network.

When are the national rail strikes?

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has announced that a fresh round of walkouts will take place this month, involving 20,000 of its members across 14 train companies.

Strikes will take place on the following dates:

  • Thursday 20 July
  • Saturday 22 July
  • Sunday 29 July

The action is likely to be on a similar scale to previous RMT strikes, which have shut down the majority of the country’s rail services. Some operators will be unable to run any trains, while others will offer a significantly reduced service.

National Rail will update customers with advice closer to the time.

Train drivers’ union Aslef will also continue overtime ban as part of its ongoing pay dispute.

Drivers represented by Aslef will not work any overtime from Monday 17 July to Saturday 22 July. This follows similar action that took place between Monday and Saturday last week.

Aslef said it had “no alternative but to take this action” as it continues to fight for better pay for its members amid the cost of living crisis.

The overtime ban will affect services operated by 15 rail companies. The following operators were not able to run their usual timetable during last week’s overtime ban:

The following companies were also impacted by the ban:

When are the doctors’ strikes?

Tens of thousands of junior doctors in England are due to strike for five days over pay – the longest period of industrial action they have taken in NHS history.

The walkout will begin at 7am on Thursday 13 July and end at 7am on Tuesday 18 July.

Consultants will then strike on Thursday 20 July and Friday 21 July, shortly after junior doctors, in a separate dispute over pay.

Based on previous action, NHS trusts expect up to 300,000 appointments and operations to be cancelled over the seven strike days.

More than 651,000 routine operations and appointments have had to be postponed already since December due to industrial action across the NHS, with knock-on delays for many thousands more.
